Wetheriggs Zoo & Animal Sanctuary (Registered Charity Number 1131536) is a small family run animal rescue centre and zoo on the edge of the Lake District. Situated on the old Wetheriggs Pottery site, the centre is currently home to over 1200 animals. These animals come from a number of different pieces of work we undertake:
Many of the animals have previously been pets which can no longer be cared for by their owners. Some of the animals in our care have arrived from other zoos and animal centres if such places are becoming overrun or struggling to cope. We also work closely with the police, customs and other organisations like the RSPCA and receive animals through this work both from the local area and from further afield including Manchester, Southampton, parts of the North East and parts of Scotland. We often also have injured/sick or orphaned native wildlife brought into us which we aim as far as possible to rehabilitate before releasing. Many of the animals in our care are looking for new homes. Rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks quail and other game birds, pigs, goats, reptiles, ferrets and more.
A major part of our work is educating people about animal care and welfare. We work with many local schools, youth groups and organisations providing outreach sessions allowing people to handle a variety of animals and learn more about them.
We also provide education sessions at the centre. Please take a look at the Education section to find out more about all we can offer.
Please note, due to the expansion of our animal collection, we do not have the space to offer any of the pottery activities such as paint a pot any longer. We apologise for any inconvience this may cause.
